"The 'help' writing centers provide is not simply fixing a comma splice like using spit to pat down an unseemly cowlick. Rather, the work of a writing center is a matter of being available mentally and emotionally to engage in the mutual construction of meaning with another." Nancy Grimm
At the University Writing Center, I tutor every kind of student, from freshmen working on English Composition papers to graduate students writing dissertations in the sciences. Students come from various backgrounds of language and experience. In one-on-one tutoring sessions lasting from 30 minutes to an hour, we tackle problems ranging from grammar, confidence, and content to tone, audience, and citation. Working at the UWC has helped me develop better assignments for my English Composition courses and become clearer in my grading and expectations, as I have a direct window into what students struggle with.
